Chocolate Dipped Apples

Chocolate Dipped Apples

As a kid, the highlight of bonfire night was sitting on my dad’s shoulders as the fireworks crackled, popped and lit up the night sky. Although, admittedly, I was terrified of the loud bangs for the first few years of my life, those memories are too distant for me to remember. Once the display finished at the rugby club we attended for the display every year, we wandered off to the little stand that sold toffee apples and I’d excitedly pick one and gnaw away at it as we wandered around the ground and, eventually, walked the fifteen minute walk home.

I never made it through a whole one and never quite understood why it was such a naughty snack - after all, it was an apple, so it was fruit, right? Covered in candied sugar, one of these apples a day surely wouldn’t keep the dentist away!

Over the years, naturally I’ve stopped attending firework displays and have certainly never even looked twice at a toffee apple, but I do still love all varieties of apple, especially when combined with pretty much any of the amazing varieties of nut butters we have available these days.

To make this well-known treat that’s become so synonymous with bonfire night a little less indulgent and more guilt-free, I’ve come up with a healthier recipe to still replicate the sweet that reminds me of being a young girl on my dad’s shoulders.

What you’ll need:

4 Apples of your choice

200g 70% Chocolate

1 handful each: Pistachios, Hazelnuts, Peanuts, Almonds - toasted and roughly chopped and poured onto separate plates

Pop the apples into a large bowl and cover with boiling water. Leave to sit for a minute, then strain the apples and dry thoroughly. Stick a skewer through the middle of each apple and set aside.

Place a bowl over a pot of simmering water, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water to create a bain-marie. Put the chocolate into the bowl and begin to stir. Melt the chocolate completely, then dip the apples into the chocolate.

Roll each one in the nuts to create 4 different varieties of chocolate dipped apples.

Using an apple, dark chocolate and lightly toasted nuts, you’ll be creating an almost healthy treat that you can enjoy without guilt!
