Going Green: Tips and tricks to do your bit for COP26
If you’ve watched the news recently you’ve probably heard a lot about COP26. COP26 is the Conference of Parties, bringing together the world's nations for the first time in one single agreement to tackle global warming and cut greenhouse gas emissions. We are fast approaching the point of no return, and the time to act is now. We are all accountable and we can all take the steps to reduce our own personal carbon footprint. But how? Here are our top tricks and tips for upping your sustainability game and doing your bit for COP26.
Make sure you are with an energy provider that supplies 100% renewable energy. Renewable energy is generated from the sun, wind or water. Non-renewable energy is generated from a natural resource that cannot be easily replaced such as Fossil Fuels. Once they are gone, they are gone. So, making the switch now will create a much more sustainable home. Check with your energy supplier where their energy comes from and make the switch to renewable energy!
Rethink your travel
Cars and transport are a big part of the carbon emissions that are being released into the atmosphere. Can you find ways to spend less time in your car? Can you choose to work from home? Or cycle to the office? Carpool with colleagues who live nearby, or jump on a train or bus if you commute within the city. Reducing the number of cars on the roads helps us to reduce our carbon footprint, and helps us to get active encouraging us to walk or cycle.
Eat with the seasons
Eating fruit and vegetables that are in season help to reduce the transport emissions that are used in shipping food all around the world. Eating locally sourced and organic where possible, opens us up to eating what nature is providing! Challenge yourself to get creative with new ingredients you might not have used before, and create a new meal for your seasonal meal's repertoire. See if you can buy locally from a market instead of a big chain supermarket to help support smaller and local business economy.
Less meat, more plants
The amount of energy and resources it takes to keep up with the demand for meat and the agriculture industry is ridiculous. Agriculture is responsible for over a third of the world's greenhouse gas emissions! By reducing your meat intake to just once or twice a week, you can make a massive difference in carbon emissions. Pack your meals with hearty lentils, beans or vegetables, so you are still getting protein, nutrition and a whole lot more plants! If you must eat meat, try to buy organic, and buy from a butcher or local grocer to avoid plastic packaging.
Be energy savvy at home
Do your bit at home and take these small steps to reduce your home energy usage.
- Turn off appliances from the wall when not in use
- Use energy efficient light bulbs
- Turning down heating by even just one degree
- Switch off lights when you leave the room
- Turn off taps when brushing your teeth
- Grow fruit and vegetables in your garden
- Reduce food waste and plastic packaging
- Hang clothes out to dry instead of using a dryer when possible
We don’t all have to do everything, but if we all do a little bit, we can make a massive difference. Don’t underestimate the power of small actions!
