Top foods for health and dental care

We all know the importance of brushing our teeth, but what about the food we are eating and how much that can impact the health of our teeth and gums?  Good dental care doesn’t just start and end with a dentist appointment, daily brushing and some dental floss.  There’s some foods we should be incorporating into our daily diet to help keep out teeth and gums happy and healthy.

Dairy (Milk, Yoghurt, Cheese)

Dairy products are great sources of Calcium which help to protect tooth enamel and keep teeth strong and healthy.  Vegan alternatives such as Soy Milk and Coconut Cheeses, are also fortified with added Calcium, which is great news for vegans or people with an intolerance to dairy.  Cheese also helps to protect the teeth against cavities.  Because it is rich in casein this protects tooth enamel from harmful plaque build up.  Cavity causing bacteria feed on the acid in the mouth, and what we eat creates higher acidity levels.  However, when we eat Calcium rich foods it mixes with the saliva to regulate the PH level of the mouth, making it less acidic.



Almonds are also high in Calcium which aids in keeping teeth strong.  Calcium helps protect enamel and restore lost minerals which helps to rebuild damaged enamel.  Also, Almonds are high in protein and low in sugar, making these a great healthy snack option between meals.

Spinach is also another good source of Calcium which keeps teeth healthy and strong by building up the tooth enamel.  Spinach is also rich in Folic Acid, a type of Vitamin B which helps to heal gum problems.  Beta Carotene is also found in Spinach which helps in keeping tooth enamel strong.
